“… And so my mom just keeps telling me about kids who knew what was going on with them from the start, but I didn’t know a thing. How was I supposed to know, though? I mean, I felt something was off, but I just thought it was because I was ugly and I hated everyone.”

“I just… I just wonder if maybe I’m crazy or something. I felt worse after becoming a teen, but I really did think I was going to get better. But I mean, I wore dresses when my mom told me to, so I guess… I don’t know.”

“Hey, you don’t have to have known right away. When we’re born, no one comes into the room to tell us the meaning behind everything we’ll feel. Some people just figure things out faster than others. It’s not exclusive to dysphoria, either, sometimes it takes more time to notice things like depression, or heck, even the flu.”

“Are you serious? But my mom said…”

“My mom said a lot of things, too. Some things are just better to learn ourselves.”

“That makes sense. Wow.”

“It was lovely to see you again and meet your wonderful family, Stella.”

“I’m so sorry about all the mistakes today. Especially with Jimmy…”

“Oh, that’s perfectly alright, hon. I guess this came as a big surprise, anyway, huh? We may be aliens, but technically, we’re only human, if that makes sense.”

“But it just felt like a disaster…”

“A disaster? Stella, I haven’t been so amused in my life! Back in Sixam, we never had moments like this. The courage to even say ‘hello’ to someone was foreign to us for centuries, if you remember from training. Sure, sometimes it’s a little uncomfortable, but that’s what’s so wonderful about SimEarth. Don’t tell me you’ve started to take all this for granted.”

“I guess I never thought about that.”

“Please, have some more tea.”

“So tell me, when you got your new, uh, equipment, did you get alien parts or human parts?”

“Jimmy! That’s rude!”

“Stella, we both know aliens and human sims are very different… down there. How else did we make the twins?”

“You’re not making this any less uncomfortable for anyone, you know.”

“Stella! I missed you so much!”

“Um, pardon me, but… do I know you?”

“Oh my Watcher! I completely forgot to tell you when we arranged the visit, didn’t I?”

“… Burple?”

“Well, that’s what they called me, hm?”

“I think I get it now! Like a disguise, right?”

“No, not really. I’m a woman. Back on Sixam, I didn’t even know it was possible for me to be myself like this, but here it’s so incredible! I go by Bethany now, and getting away from the public eye is just a benefit! You know, I always felt like I was just acting a part on a show my whole life, but I thought that was just the screen-time talking. Now look at me, I feel like I’m living a real life!”

“That’s amazing, Bur-I mean, Bethany. Sorry.”

“Don’t sweat it, hon.”
